A rental car is the best way to explore beyond the hotel zone — Tulum, Playa del Carmen, the cenotes, and Mayan ruins. But renting in Mexico works differently than in the US, and not knowing the rules is how people end up paying far more than they expected.

The insurance surprise

Mexico requires third-party liability insurance on rental cars, and liability coverage from a US credit card or US auto policy is generally not accepted for this. That's why the $5-a-day deal you booked online can turn into a much bigger bill at the counter. Your credit card may still cover damage to the rental car itself (check before you go), but plan on buying the liability coverage.

Clutch tip: Book with a rate that already includes Mexican liability insurance, and get the total in writing. It's usually cheaper than adding it at the counter.

Avoid common scams

  • Inspect and photograph the car before you drive off — every panel, the wheels, and the windshield — and make sure existing damage is written down.
  • At gas stations, check that the pump starts at zero, say clearly how much you want, and count your change.
  • Know the deposit. Companies often put a large hold on your credit card. Ask how much and when it's released.
  • Ignore people approaching you in the airport claiming to be your rental company. Go to the official counter or shuttle.

Driving tips

  • Watch for topes (speed bumps). They can be big and unmarked.
  • Use the toll highway when you can — it's usually faster and in better condition.
  • Avoid driving long distances at night.
  • Carry cash in pesos for tolls and gas.

Frequently asked questions

Why is renting a car in Cancún more expensive at the counter?

Mexico requires third-party liability insurance on rental cars, and liability coverage from US credit cards or US auto policies is generally not accepted for it. Low online rates often don't include it, so it's added at the counter.

Is it safe to drive in Cancún?

Many tourists drive the main routes to Tulum and Playa del Carmen. Use the main highways, watch for speed bumps called topes, avoid long drives at night, and photograph the car before you leave the lot.
